Guan
Yu was the sworn brother of Liu Bei and Zhang Fei, the second-eldest of the
three. He was renowned throughout the land for his strength and ferocity in
battle. Guan Yu is also famous for his valorous ride, the Red Hare, described to
be
"of a uniform color like glowing-sun red---not a hair of another color.
It measured ten spans from head to tail and from hoof to neck eight spans. When
it neighed, the sound filled the empyrean and shook the ocean."
For a length of his life, Guan Yu served the warlord Cao Cao to pay
off a debt. Another reason was that he did not know the location of his
brothers. When he discovers where Liu Bei is, he flees Cao Cao's side to reunite
with hi brother. In the game, this is stage is called Guan Yu's Escape;
appropiately titled, as Wei was angry at the loss of the great warrior.
Guan Yu proceeds to adopt Guan Ping, and, at least in the game, the
two seem to share a casual and friendly bond, with Guan Ping looking heavily up
to his father. In the book, however, Guan Ping seems to be one of the few that
could manage to calm Guan Yu when he was angry. It is Guan Ping that spares a
man from death in one of the book's chapters. Guan Yu was eventually captured by
Lu Meng/Lu Xun/Sun Quan , and executed
upon refusal to join Wu.
Guan Yu was famous for his steed, Red Hare, and the two were perfectly suited
for one another. Due to the weight of himself and his weapon (which was a good
40 pounds), all of his previous rides were crushed. But Red Hare, a majestic and
incredible stallion, bore this weight and loved its master well, for after Guan
Yu's death it refused to eat and died soon after.
