A rat of high status, Remy, is the son of the leader of a 'wealthy' rat clan. Gifted with a super sense of smell and cooking talent, Remy's desire to be a chef often gets him into trouble-and fortune. It is his craving to cook that leads to his initial capture, and then career as a chef, through the clumsy but lovable Linguini.

Remy was separated from his clan when he rushed back for a cookbook entitled, Anyone Can Cook. Remy then ended up in a gourmet restaurant. Longing to cook, he investigated the scene, but curiousity killed the rat. Unable to resist, he tried to fix a horrible soup, where forth he was discovered, captured, and condemned to be killed. Linguini, his supposed killer, could not bring himself to kill the rat and released him on the terms that they work together in the kitchen.

Remy began to live in an oven mitt at Linguini's, and he prepared meals in the kitchen. He befriended Linguini, and eventually achieved his dream of owning a restaurant.
