Huang, who was also known as Gongming, grew up in the country of Yang, born in 169 A.D. He lived in the late years of the Eastern Han dynasty, where he worked as an administrative officer. However, this courier didn't last long. He was soon summoned by Yang Feng, and assisted in the campaign against the Yellow Turban. In 196 A.D., after the evil Dong Zhuo had passed away, Gongming and Feng helped return Emporer Xian from Chang 'an back to Luo Yang. In the same year, Cao Cao came to Xu Chang where he and Huang met. At this, Huang swore loyalty to Cao Cao, joining his camp. Xu Huang was always a very noble, honorable man. However, his honor was put to a test when his friend, the mighty "God of War" Guan Yu, (sworn brother of Liu Bei) joined Shu- and enemy kingdom. But Huang would never go easy on his friend. After the death of Cao Cao in 220 A.D., Xu Huang continued to serve under Cao Cao's son, Cao Pi. After 58 years from 169 A.D., in 227 A.D. (seven years after the death of Cao), Huang passed away. It is said in the novel that he was shot down by a skillful archer, but another source speaks that he died of illness.
