Yue Ying

Historic Biography:

Yue Ying was the wife of Zhuge Liang. Her true name is unknown, however in the game she is called Yue Ying. Readers of the novel most likely know her as Lady Huang, the daughter of Huang Chengyan.  Lady Huang’s father Huang Chengyan was kind and even assisted those who fought against Shu. In chapter 84 when Lu Xun of Wu was lost in Zhuge Liang's maze, the spirited, elderly man helped him out of the maze. Chengyan sent a letter to Zhuge Liang explaining how Ying was certainly not a beauty. She was rather plain and known more for her intelligence. She specialized in geography, astronomy, and so on. (In tales some say she invented cooking robots.) When hearing of her wisdom, Liang sent for her and the two were wed at once.  As husband and wife, Lady Huang and Zhuge Liang studied strategy together. Yue Ying would give him advice in his carrier as the loyal strategist of Shu. Ying loved him truly, for he took her for who she was, modest, kind-hearted, and intelligent; he didn’t care that she was rather plain. The two gave birth to Zhuge Zhan. Their grandson was Zhuge Shang. She had two brother-in-laws, Zhuge Jin and Zhuge Jun. Ying hadn’t lived long. She died in the year of 234 A.D., (and was born an unknown year).  Some sources state that while Ying was not of such beauty as other women (The seducing Diao Chan for example), she was not ugly, rather she had spread the rumor so as to be renowned for her intelligence rather than appearance.  They say that Liang saw through this and had the two married at once. However, some places in which I read state the opposite.
