Taigong Wang in History

Taigong Wang, also and more commonly known as Jiang Ziya, is a key character in the book Fengshen Yanyi, described as being an old, eccentric man.

In his time, the current ruler of the Shang Dynasty, King Zhou, was a greatly hated figure who spent his days cavorting with his concubine, Da Ji. Da Ji herself has a very ambiguous story, supposedly being sent by the celestial Nu Wa to corrupt the king and his dominion. However, Da Ji lost sight of her mission and began to enjoy her say in King Zhou's rule. She became corrupted and in due time began to relish in the cries of tortured victims.
From the sidelines, Jiang Ziya's resentment of the situation knew no bounds. Ziya was a wise old sage that harbored a strange and peculiar method of fishing; his line bore no bait nor was it actually submerged in water. Instead it hovered just above, a puzzling and seemingly illogical thing.

One day King Wen of Zhou discovered Ziya and, having been told that such a sage would help him rule his state, immediately pursued him. He gave him a position in his court as prime minister and the title Jiang Taigongwang.
After the passing of King Wen, Taigong Wang revealed a plan to end King Zhou; that they must be patient. And sure enough as the peoples' faith in their king wavered, due to many series of unjust torment and punishment, they too turned against him and joined the cause of Taigong Wang.
Taigong Wang is credited as the one that exorcised the demonic Da Ji.
